A special transfer window is set to open for Mamelodi Sundowns in just over a week ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup scheduled for the USA in June. Sundowns will have the opportunity to register new players between June 1 and 10 as they prepare for the World Cup.
This year’s tournament marks the first time that four African teams will participate. The World Cup will run from June 14 to July 13, 2025. Sundowns will be joined by Morocco’s Wydad Athletic Club, Esperance of Tunisia, and Egyptian giants Al Ahly.
Traditionally, clubs in the PSL begin registering new players on July 1 to prepare for the upcoming season. The transfer window typically lasts until the end of August but has recently been extended to mid-September. With Sundowns playing in the World Cup, a special window has been confirmed.
WHAT FIFA HAS SAID ABOUT SPECIAL TRANSFER WINDOW
FIFA this week said all participating teams will have an “exceptional” transfer window early in June. “All 20 FIFA Member Associations whose clubs will participate in the FIFA Club World Cup have confirmed the opening of an exceptional transfer window from 1 to 10 June,” reads a FIFA post on X.</p>
Sundowns are reportedly interested in adding Stellenbosch FC left-back Fawaaz Basadien to their squad. This development ensures that Downs will head to America with all their new recruits available for coach Miguel Cardoso to choose from.
The Brazilians will face Ulsan HD from South Korea in their opening match [June 17] of the newly expanded tournament in Orlando, Florida. This will be followed by upcoming clashes against Borussia Dortmund [June 21] and Fluminense [June 25] in Group F.
Recently crowned Betway Premiership champions for the eighth consecutive time, Sundowns now turn their attention to the CAF Champions League final on Saturday. They will host Pyramids FC of Egypt in the first-leg at Loftus Versfeld Stadium. The second-leg is scheduled at the June 30 Stadium in Cairo on June 1.
Meanwhile, the Club World Cup will feature 63 matches across 11 cities. Orlando is the only city with two venues. The final will take place at MetLife Stadium in New York, New Jersey.
