Kaizer Chiefs missed out on the top eight finish in the Betway Premiership after playing to a goalless draw against Polokwane City FC at FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Glamour Boys hosted Polokwane City at home in the last match of the league in the 2024/25 season. Chiefs clashed with the Limpopo-based side, looking to return to winning after going eight games without registering a win in the league.
Amakhosi suffered four defeats against Golden Arrows, Richards Bay FC, Marumo Gallants, and Orlando Pirates. They played draws against Cape Town City FC, TS Galaxy, Chippa United, and Sekhukhune United.
The Soweto giants were in desperate need of maximum points to secure a spot in the top eight and qualify for the MTN8 next season.
Before facing PLK City, the Naturena-based side was occupying the ninth spot on the league table with 31 points.
Despite their persistent struggles in the Premiership, Chiefs won a trophy for the first time in a decade. A few weeks ago, Chiefs clinched the 2025 Nedbank Cup title after beating Pirates 2-1 in the final at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
POLOKWANE CITY FAILED TO CONVERT WITH THE GOALKEEPER OFF HIS LINE
In a tightly-contested match, PLK City and Chiefs had a slow start to the match after a handful of misplaced passes in the final third. Polokwane City came close to opening the scoring on the half-hour mark; however, Mokibelo Ramabu could not convert with the goalkeeper, Brandon Petersen, off his line.
On the other hand, Chiefs also had a chance to take the lead in the 40th minute through Edmilson Dove’s header, which went inches over the crossbar.
After all the efforts, Chiefs and Polokwane City went into the half-time break deadlocked at 0-0, and both clubs had it all to do in the second-half.
In the second stanza, the Soweto giants failed to find the back of the net to collect three points. The disappointing results saw Chiefs finish ninth on the log with 32 points.
This is the second season in a row that Amakhosi fail to quality for the MTN8 as they finshed in 10th place last campaign.
