Zizwe United lodge complaint over referee appointments

Western Cape ABC Motsepe League side Zizwe United

Zizwe United have lodged a formal complaint against SAFA Western Cape, citing irregularities in the appointment of match officials for their ABC Motsepe League provincial decider against Hanover Park FC last weekend.

Hanover Park were crowned the SAFA Western Cape overall champions after their 4-2 win on penalties following a 1-1 draw in regulation time on Saturday, 17 May 2025.

The showdown between Hanover Park and Zizwe was played at Cloetesville Sports Ground in Stellenbosch.

Hanover Park’s celebrations to represent the Western Cape at the upcoming ABC Motsepe League National Playoffs next month might be short-lived by the case that Zizwe have lodged.

DETAILS OF WHY ZIZWE UNITED LODGED A COMPLAINT AGAINST SAFA WESTERN CAPE

Zizwe alleges that the match officials appointed for their provincial playoffs encounter against Hanover Park were chosen by Abdul Ebrahim [SAFA head of referees], who is not authorised to do so. Therefore, the appointment of the match officials were inter alia, unlawful and irregular.

The side claims that Luvuyo Phuphuma is the only designated person for appointing referees in the province. Phuphuma is the official SAFA Western Cape referee coordinator.

Zizwe went on to state that this is in contravention of regulation 3.6 as well as rules 30.1 and 3.2 of the SAFA competitions uniform rules.

In terms of regulation 3.6 of the ABC Motsepe League, the SAFA provincial referees’ coordinator is the designated person to appoint the match officials and match commissioners for the provincial playoffs.

Zizwe also cited they felt hard done that the referee who was appointed to officiate the match, suggesting that Hanover Park were being favoured by the match official as most of the decisions were against them.

The DC date for the matter to be heard has yet to be confirmed.
