After securing two accolades at the ceremony for the Kaizer Chiefs DStv Diski Challenge champions, Kabelo Nkgwesa expressed his confidence that “there is still more to come” from his budding career.
The Amakhosi reserves had an outstanding 2024/25 campaign as they clinched their first DDC title. They finished with a record 70 points from 28 matches, winning 22, drawing four and losing only twice.
In addition, Chiefs concluded the season with a record winning margin of seven points over second-placed Stellenbosch FC. This feat was achieved despite a reduced season due to Royal AM‘s expulsion.
At a celebratory ceremony held on Friday at FNB Stadium in Soweto, promising left-back Nkgwesa, who is tipped for promotion to the senior Chiefs squad and has represented South Africa at junior level, claimed both the Most Improved Player and the coveted Player of the Season accolades.
The event, attended by club legends including Siphiwe Tshabalala, Willard Katsande, Mandla Masango, and Reneilwe Letsholonyane, also saw Takalani Mazhamba named Goalkeeper of the Season.
Pheko Phago earned the respect of his peers, taking home the Players’ Player of the Season award. And leading the charge upfront, Naledi Hlongwane was recognised as the Top Goal Scorer.

KABELO NGWESA REFLECTS ON KAIZER CHIEFS’ DDC TRIUMPH
Double-award winner Nkgwesa reflected on Amakhosi’s challenging yet triumphant season, recalling a pivotal moment when the coaching staff spurred them on to win all remaining games after a loss to Mamelodi Sundowns.
“I am very happy. What a great day today [Friday],” said the talented left-back. I am grateful for being given a platform to display my quality, and I can say there’s still more to come from me.
“We knew it wouldn’t be an easy season for us. There was a time when we lost against Mamelodi Sundowns, our coaching staff told us that it would be our last defeat, and we must win all our remaining games. I was a bit shocked when I heard that, but in the back of my mind, I thought, playing as a team, we could do it.
“And we showed it, especially away to Stellenbosch, playing with 10 men. I was fortunate to give a good assist to give us the lead, and, although they equalised, a draw was a good result. It was a great season, and I want to congratulate all my teammates for playing a huge role in our success.”
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Nkgwesa added: “Patience and faith… a big thanks to the Kaizer Chiefs Youth family for being patient with me and believing in me since day one. Thank you to my family for the support they’ve given me. This is the beginning of everything.”
