After Cape Town Spurs’ relegation from the Motsepe Foundation Championship, a midfielder they previously attempted to sell for R5 million now appears set to depart on a free transfer.
Betway Premiership clubs are targeting out-of-contract midfielder Khaya Mfecane, who will likely move on a free transfer.
CT Spurs were unable to renew Mfecane’s contract, which is set to expire at the end of June. With only a month remaining before the expiration of his contract, the Spurs academy product is now free to sign with any club of his choosing.
The 23-year-old midfielder is one of the talents who rose through Spurs’ development system after being promoted in the 2019/20 season when the club was still known as Ajax Cape Town. The former South African youth international has the versatility to also play as a right-back, a role he excelled in under the guidance of coach Ernst Middendorp.
The midfielder had previously drawn interest from several clubs, but no deals were finalised as none could meet the Urban Warriors’ asking price of approximately R5 million.

SPURS EXIT LOOMING FOR MIDFIELDER KHAYA MFECANE?
Clubs such as Chippa United and TS Galaxy had previously expressed interest in the talented midfielder, who scored three goals in 27 appearances in the National First Division. However, they withdrew their interest due to the high transfer fee demanded by Spurs.
With the player now available on a free transfer, clubs in the Betway Premiership are likely to reignite their interest. Mfecane is not the only Spurs player attracting attention; Asanele Velebayi is expected to receive numerous offers after the club previously blocked his potential move to Kaizer Chiefs.
Luke Baartman is another player likely to draw interest from various clubs. Following a strong performance at the AFCON Under 20, Siviwe Nkwali is set to join Stellenbosch FC next season. The 19-year-old right back has already signed a pre-contract.
In recent years, CT Spurs have developed several talented players. However, after competing in the top-flight league during the 2023/24 season, they have lost key players such as Rushwin Dortley, Chumani Butsaka, and Ashley Cupido.
