‘How fair is that?’: CT City boss questions Arrows/SuperSport match

Cape Town City FC chairman John Comitis has questioned the PSL DC ruling to re-schedule the Betway Premiership match between SuperSport United and Golden Arrows three months after it was abandoned.

The Betway Premiership clash was abandoned at half-time when the score was 1-1 due to load shedding at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on 23 February.

According to the PSL compliance manual 6.3.2 adopted on 3 August 2021, “Each stadium should be provided with a generator which has sufficient capacity to provide adequate lighting to the field of play and the change rooms, grandstand, VIP facilities and all other improvements.”

In this case, there was no backup generator at the venue, resulting in the abandonment of the match. The game will now be completed at the same venue on Thursday, 29 May, with only 45 minutes of the second-half to be played.

SuperSport need a point to secure their top-flight status, while a defeat would mean they will have to battle it out in the Promotional /Relegation Playoffs with two Motsepe Foundation Championship teams.

CAPE TOWN CITY FC FEELING AGGRIEVED BY PSL DECISION ON SUPERSPORT UNITED V GOLDEN ARROWS MATCH

Another Betway Premiership side that could be affected by the result of the match between Arrows and SuperSport is Cape Town City. The Citizens could drop to the playoffs spot if Matsatsantsa avoid defeat on Thursday.

Comitis told Phalaphala FM on Tuesday that the club was weighing their options regarding the decision by the league.

“We are looking at the matter. We are reviewing our options, and we believe that we truly have a case here to take it back to the PSL,” said Comitis.

WHY JOHN COMITIS BELIEVES CERTAIN RULES WERE BROKEN WHEN MAKING THE DECISION TO RESUME THE FIXTURE

“As a club, we have communicated with the PSL, so at this stage, I would like to leave it as is. The decision that has been made has created a situation where they probably had to break five rules in order to achieve what they have achieved.”

“The first one was that the game didn’t take place within 48 hours. The next one is that it wasn’t a force majeure. The third one is that they can’t continue at half-time and replicate the game now after three months, because there are different players at clubs, there are yellow cards and a whole lot of different reasons why it can’t happen.

“The worst part is the league is finished. They are now sitting in a position where they can decide what they need to see what they need. How fair is that? Where is the fair play? So we are really aggrieved. We have no problem if we end up in the playoffs; the team is ready. But it must be fair, and it must be on the pitch. Not in the boardroom.”
