Mvala on Sundowns fans: ‘Whether they are 57 or what, we appreciate them’

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Mothobi Mvala has expressed his appreciation for the club’s supporters, subtly referencing the “57” jab often aimed at their fanbase size.

Mvala, unprompted, acknowledged the ongoing banter on the social media streets, stating, “Whether they are 57 or what, we appreciate them.”

The remarks by the Bafana Bafana international come amidst persistent taunts from rival fans who mock Sundowns for their purportedly small number of loyal supporters, often highlighted by the low attendance at many of their matches.

Mvala addressed the media on the sidelines of Sundowns’ announcement of Carling Black Label as their 2025 FIFA Club World Cup sponsor this past Tuesday in Melrose. And with the beer brand offering fans a chance to travel to the Club World Cup via their Score Predictor platform, Mvala had nothing but praise for the unwavering support of the Sundowns faithful.

He extended a heartfelt message of gratitude to the Downs fans, emphasising the profound impact their presence has on the team, regardless of the numbers.

“The support from the fans means a lot to us and it really pushes us and gives us energy,” said Mvala, who recently recovered from an injury. “I know that most of the time, they leave the stadium with happy faces, and whether they are 57 or people say what, we appreciate them very much.

“They must know that we appreciate them; without them, we are nothing; without them, football is boring. We really need them to support us, and we want to thank them for always coming to the games.

“Whether it is raining or sunshine, they are always on the stands, singing for us, they never give up, even when we do not get the results that we want, but they are always there. We appreciate them, and they must keep on doing that, support the club.”

True to Mvala’s words, Sundowns fans filled up the Loftus Versfeld Stadium this past Saturday, despite a disappointing 1-1 draw against Pyramids FC in the first-leg of the CAF Champions League final. The return-leg is set to be staged at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo on Sunday evening.

After the Champions League final, Sundowns will embark on their Club World Cup journey in the USA, which kicks off on Tuesday, June 17, with a game against Korean side Ulsan Hyundai in Group F.

Sundowns will also do battle against Brazilian giants Fluminense and Borussia Dortmund in their group.
