Orlando Pirates have begun their squad reshuffle for the upcoming season, confirming the departure of two players from the club just hours after their final match of the 2024/25 campaign.

Miguel Timm and long-serving captain Innocent Maela will depart Pirates in June upon the expiration of their contracts, a move the Soweto giants announced via their official social media platforms on Thursday.

Pirates’ announcement followed their 1-1 draw against Magesi FC in the Betway Premiership at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday. In a touching moment, Maela received a standing ovation from the Buccaneers faithful when he was substituted in the 66th minute, a clear indication that his playing days with the club are now behind him.

It’s been reported that the 32-year-old has been offered a non-playing role within Pirates set-up. His service to Bucs has been exemplary, with interim coach Ncikazi praising his leadership qualities. Ncikazi also described Maela as “a true leader on and off the field,” adding that he would continue to be a leader even in a non-playing capacity due to his intelligence and education.

During his 209 appearances across all competitions at Pirates, Maela secured several trophies, including the Nedbank Cup.

“From a boy with a dream to the Captain of the Bucs ship. Maela, you lived the dream and led with pride. Thank you for the memories, the moments, and the legacy. Once. Always,” said Pirates.

Meanwhile, Pirates extended a heartfelt message to departing midfielder Timm, acknowledging his contributions to the club.

“Thank you, Miguel Timm, for every tackle, every pass, and every battle fought. Wishing you all the best Once. Always.”

Timm leaves Pirates after a challenging 2024/25 season, where he struggled for game-time. Despite being a consistent starter in the previous two seasons, the talented 33-year-old central midfielder fell out of favour.

He joined the Buccaneers three seasons ago from Marumo Gallants and was instrumental in Jose Riveiro’s squad rebuild, contributing to the five domestic trophies won during the Spanish coach’s tenure. He made over 60 appearances for the club.

As he departs Pirates, the highly-rated midfielder is already being linked with a move to Sekhukhune United, a development previously reported by this publication.
