Sundowns extend Terrence Mashego’s contract amidst Stellies interest

Mamelodi Sundowns have exercised the contract extension option for left-back Terrence Mashego, amidst reported interest from Stellenbosch FC.

Mashego joined Sundowns in September 2022 and has since featured in 45 appearances across all competitions for the club.

However, the 29-year-old defender is reportedly keen on a move away from the recently crowned Betway Premiership champions, having struggled for consistent game time. Mashego has played in just 13 matches across all competitions for the Brazilians this season, a situation that has reportedly led to him losing his place in the national team.

Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has often favoured Aubrey Modiba in the left-back position. Modiba, whose contract was also recently extended, has made 34 appearances in all competitions this season. Another left-back whose stay at Masandawana has been extended is Divine Lunga, who has played 16 games across all competitions.

With Stellenbosch FC reportedly aware of Sundowns’ interest in their highly-rated Fawaaz Basadien, there’s speculation that the Winelands club is eyeing the Mamelodi-born Mashego as a potential replacement.

Sources suggest that Mashego, a Bafana Bafana international, is keen on the prospect of joining Stellies.
The opportunity to play in the CAF Confederation Cup with the Winelands club is reportedly appealing to the roving left-back.

Stellenbosch would likely welcome the addition of the experienced former Cape Town City FC defender, especially as Omega Mdaka continues to find his footing in top-flight football. Mdaka, a Kaizer Chiefs academy graduate, joined Stellenbosch at the start of the recently concluded season and made nine starts across all competitions.

The 2025 CAF Confederation Cup semi-finalists Stellies will undoubtedly be eager to add experienced depth should they lose Basadien.

In January, Kaizer Chiefs were reportedly interested in signing Mashego, but their offer to Sundowns fell short. It appears Sundowns may be reluctant to sell to their Soweto rivals.

Mashego’s career took off at Mthatha Bucks before a transfer to TS Galaxy, where he earned the Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player award. A subsequent move to Cape Town City saw him firmly carve a niche for himself in local football.
