SuperSport United CEO Stan Matthews has offered an honest admission regarding the persistent rumours linking the club with a potential sale of its PSL status.
A few weeks ago, reports emerged that Matsatsantsa would be acquired by a consortium with the explicit intention of bringing Bloemfontein Celtic back into the PSL.
Speaking to FARPost at the time, Matthews emphatically declared that the speculation surrounding the club’s PSL status sale was not a matter that held any of their “thoughts”.
The Tshwane-based side successfully steered clear of the PSL Promotion/Relegation Playoffs at the close of the 2024/25 season. They had been battling hard to avoid a 15th-place finish, which would have put them in the dreaded playoffs.
Ultimately, they secured a safe 14th position in the league, finishing the season with 27 points from 28 matches.
They drew 1-1 with Golden Arrows in the final game of the season on Thursday. This was the completion of 45 minutes of the match that was suspended in February. The Tshwane-based side visibly celebrated the point, knowing they had avoided the drop zone.
Speaking after the match, Matthews admitted that the rumours, emerging amid the team’s struggles for results, added to their difficulties. He revealed that the club’s employees, including players, were “asking questions” and were concerned about their future.

STAN MATTHEWS – ‘THERE WERE QUESTIONS FROM PLAYERS’
“Two weeks ago, rumours and speculation and all that kind of stuff came out,” said Matthews. “That was tough because suddenly, from being together and going through the war, there were questions from players, agents, sponsors and the technical team.
“Suddenly, I had a very anxious and concerned group. It’s been tough managing that.
“The anxiety and stress of staying in the league on its own is tough. But when you’ve got constant rumours that keep coming back and never go away in terms of the club, it’s unsettling. It’s destabilising for human beings, especially this particular group of human beings.”
