PSL clubs line up for unheralded Zim goalie

Two PSL targeting Marshal Takarinda of Herentals College FC

Two PSL clubs are targeting the services of one of the finest goalkeeping prospects from Zimbabwe, FARPost has learnt.

Over the years, Zimbabwe has carved out fine goalkeepers that went onto leave indelible marks across all professional SA leagues.

Some notable examples include the late George Chigova, who played for Polokwane City FC and SuperSport United. Chigova died in November 2023 after a long illness.

Current Zimbabwe number Washington Arubi has made a name for himself after featuring for the University of Pretoria, SuperSport and his current club Marumo Gallants.

Elvis Chipezeze, who was recently recalled to represent The Warriors of Zimbabwe squad, has been exceptional for Magesi FC. Chipezeze has also played for Baroka FC. Retired goalkeeper Tapuwa Kapini and Energy Murambadoroย also left decent records in the Betway Premiership.

Kapini played for Platinum Stars, AmaZulu FC, Highlands Parkย and Sekhukhune United. Murambadoro played for Bidvest Wits, Mpumalanga Black Aces and AmaZulu FC.

Moreover, another goalie appears to be on the horizon to join the list of Zimbabwean goalkeepers who played in SA.

GOALKEEPER MARSHAL TAKARINDA TARGETED BY MARUMO GALLANTS

FARPost sources have revealed that Herentals College FC goalkeeper Marshal Takarinda is being targeted by Marumo Gallants.

At the moment, Gallants have an ageing goalkeeping department which consists of Arubi [38], Daniel Akpeyi [37] and Kagiso Mlambo [34].

And Takarinda could be an option to refresh their goalkeeping department. In addition, one Motsepe Foundation Championship club is said to be ready to trial the lanky goalkeeper.

His agent, Kudakwashe Garufu, confirmed that there has been interest in the 24-year-old. Takarinda has played nine in the 13 Zimbabwe PSL games played so far. Furthermore, Takarinda is not the only Zimbabwean player who has attracted interest from PSL clubs.

Leading Zimbabwean PSL goalscorer Washington Navaya has been subject to massive interest from at least six PSL goalkeepers, including Gallants.

Navaya has scored nine goals in 13 matches for his current team, TelOne FC. His closest rival is Billy Veremu with eight goals under his belt.

Midfielder Junior Makunike is also being tracked by several PSL clubs. Makunike will be hoping to use the 2025 COSAFA tournament as a stepping stone to finally break into the South African league.
