Orlando Pirates have officially announced the departure of full-backs Thabiso Monyane and Paseka Mako. Monyane had previously been linked with a move to rivals Kaizer Chiefs.
The Buccaneers confirmed the duo’s exit via a social media post. “We bid farewell to Paseka Mako and Thabiso Monyane. The club thanks them for their commitment and contribution to Orlando Pirates. Wishing them the very best in their next chapters.”
The past season saw game time diminish significantly for two players at the club. Despite the departure of coach Jose Riveiro, which might have suggested a fresh start, the club has instead decided to part ways with them.
In the recently concluded 2024/25 season, Mako started just 12 matches, with an additional 14 appearances coming off the bench. It appears Riveiro favoured Deon Hotto in the left wing-back position.
Monyane, on the other hand, found himself playing second fiddle to Deano van Rooyen, who joined the club from Stellenbosch FC. He only managed 12 appearances in the recently finished campaign. The Buccaneers have already secured another young right-back in Tshepho Mashiloane and also have Bandile Shandu in their ranks.

MONYANE OFFERED TO KAIZER CHIEFS
The 25-year-old was set to become a free agent at the end of June. His minutes significantly diminished during the 2024/25 season following Van Rooyen’s arrival.
The Bucs academy graduate also battled injuries, which further hampered his opportunities, despite being highly regarded within the club’s academy ranks.
Interestingly, when Monyane’s representatives realised a new deal with Pirates was unlikely, they reportedly offered him to Chiefs.
Amakhosi are actively searching for a right-back. With coach Nasreddine Nabi’s preferred option, Thabang Matuludi, seemingly unavailable due to a lengthy contract, Monyane could present a viable alternative. Chiefs have primarily relied on Reeve Frosler and Dillon Solomons.
