Laffor names the coach for Sundowns’ Champions League dream

Former Mamelodi Sundowns attacker Anthony Laffor has made a bold claim, revealing the one coach who can deliver the CAF Champions League trophy for Masandawana next season.

The former Liberian international was part of the Sundowns team that won the club’s maiden Champions League title in 2016 under the guidance of Pitso Mosimane.

He played a pivotal role, scoring two crucial goals in seven matches in the competition that season. One of these goals came in the semi-final against Zesco United, and the other was scored in the final against Zamalek.

Having experienced continental cup success, Laffor believes that if Mosimane were to be given the opportunity to return to the Brazilians, the club would win the Champions League next season.

LAFFOR CLAIMS MOSIMANE CAN BRING CHAMPIONS LEAGUE TO SUNDOWNS

“Coach @therealpitsomosimane [Pitso Mosimane], only if you could get a chance to take over our beloved club @sundownsfc [Sundowns], next season Champions League is sure. Let us put football politics aside,” Laffor posted on his official Instagram account.

“It’s about that time @therealpitsomosimane comes back home. Only he knows how to coach Sundowns. I’ve been there, I know exactly what I’m talking about.

Since their 2016 triumph, the Tshwane giants struggled to reach the Champions League final for nearly a decade under the leadership of different coaches, including Mosimane, the co-coaching duo of Manqoba Mngqithi and Rulani Mokwena, and eventually Mokwena as sole head coach.

It was Miguel Cardoso who guided them to the final this season, though they ultimately lost to the Egyptian side, Pyramids FC.

Meanwhile, after departing Sundowns in 2020, Mosimane went on to achieve significant continental success, winning the Champions League twice with Al Ahly. He also guided the “Club of the Century” to a league title, Egyptian Cup and two CAF Super Cups.

Following his tenure with Al Ahly, he then moved to Saudi Arabia, where he successfully resurrected Al Ahli, guiding them to automatic promotion to the top-flight league.

Thereafter, he also mentored Al-Wahda [UAE], Abha Club [Saudi] and Esteghlal FC [Iran].
