Portuguese club courting Mhleli Mabuza amid Chiefs trial uncertainty
South African right-back Mhleli Mabuza is currently exploring his options after his recent trial stint with Kaizer Chiefs appears to have concluded without a concrete offer.
The 24-year-old, who spent a week under assessment at Naturena, is reportedly yet to hear from the club.
Mabuza spent a week under assessment at the club, though this period coincided with the final two games of the season, leading to a sense that he may not have received a thorough evaluation.
Following the uncertainty at the Soweto giants, Mabuza is reportedly in talks with a newly-promoted Portuguese third-tier side, where his impressive performances sparked interest from a number of clubs.
The KZN academy graduate made a significant impact during his time in Portugal, culminating in him being named the Best Right-Back in the Campeonato de Portugal. His outstanding performances for Louletano DC in the fourth divsion saw him contribute an impressive nine assists for the southern European club.
INTEREST IN MHLELI MABUZA LOCALLY
Before the Amakhosi trial stint, Mabuza, whose contract with Louletano has come to an end, attracted interest from a number of local clubs. While he is considering a return home, sources close to the player have revealed that he will weigh up the Portugal opportunity.
“He has an offer from Portugal which he must act on before the end of June. But there’s also interest locally from a number of other clubs,” the source told FARPost.
Among the Betway Premiership clubs reportedly monitoring the skillful fullback are AmaZulu FC, TS Galaxy and Sekhukhune United. With most clubs currently on an off-season break, Mabuza may have to wait a little before there is any movement.
He moved to Portugal in 2018 after impressing during a series of friendly matches. He recently shared that his European journey has not been easy, citing challenges with the different style of play, language, and culture.
