A Mamelodi Sundowns star has frankly made an admission about their 2024/25 season, revealing the reasons behind what he considers a disappointing campaign.
Just as in the past three seasons, the Brazilians secured only the league title this campaign, lifting the new-look Betway Premiership trophy. This was their eighth league title in a row.
They made it to two major cup finals – the Carling Knockout Cup and the CAF Champions League.
However, they were stunned by Magesi FC, who beat them 2-1 in the Carling Cup final in November under Manqoba Mngqithi. And their Champions League aspirations also ended in defeat, losing 3-2 on aggregate to Pyramids FC in the final.
Tshwane giants defender Terrence Mashego described the just-ended campaign as a “bad season,” stating that for his side, “winning the league only is not enough.”

MASHEGO – ‘WINNING THE LEAGUE ONLY IS NOT ENOUGH’
“For a status of Sundowns, I would say it was a bad season because we always want to win everything,” said Mashego on Prime Time Sports with Victor Molefe on UKhozi FM.
“So, for us to win the league only, it was a bad season. I don’t want to lie.
“Now, we’re going to the FIFA Club World Cup, a big tournament. It’s a dream for any South African footballer or any footballer to play in the Club World Cup.
“It’s a big competition for everyone, and we need to be ready for it. But this season was a bad one for us because the league only is not enough.”
Sundowns are now fully shifting their attention to the prestigious FIFA Club World Cup set to unfold in the USA.
Their highly-anticipated group stage journey will commence on 18 June with a challenging encounter against Ulsan. Thereafter, they will face another stern test, going head-to-head with German powerhouse Borussia Dortmund on 21 June.
Miguel Cardoso’s men will then conclude their group stage matches with a clash against Fluminense on 25 June, aiming to secure a strong position in the global club competition.
