PSL confirms Motsepe Foundation Championship trophy handover details

Durban City players celebrate after winning the Motsepe Foundation Championship

The Premier Soccer League [PSL] has officially confirmed the details for the Motsepe Foundation Championship Trophy handover ceremony.

Durban City FC were crowned the 2024/25 season champions and subsequently gained promotion to the Betway Premiership.

But the PSL announced in May that there would be a delay in handing over the trophy on the last day of the season, as per the usual. This comes after the PSL Dispute Resolution Chamber [DRC] had been dealing with a case brought by JDR Stars and later Cape Town Spurs.

JDR Stars lodged a protest against the eligibility of Sazi Magawana and were also joined by Cape Town Spurs. The two clubs claim that Magawana was not registered properly by Durban City after his move from Marumo Gallants.

Their argument was that the player was supposed to receive his clearance from Leruma United, who purchased the status from Gallants. But their cases were dismissed by both the PSL DRC and the SAFA arbitration.

The matter is scheduled to sit on Tuesday, 17 June at the High Court, Gauteng Division in Johannesburg. PSL, SAFA and all other 15 Motsepe Foundation Championship teams are respondents on the matter.
