Jali joins Highbury FC after Chippa exit

Utility player Samkelo Jali has joined Motsepe Foundation Championship side Highbury FC following his departure from Chippa United FC.

Jali began his tenure with the Chilli Boys at the start of the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season. However, the 22-year-old right back and centre back made only two appearances for the senior team, spending most of his time in the DStv Diski Challenge [DDC] team.

His contract, which was a one-year deal, is set to expire in June, and both parties agreed to part ways. Highbury FC, having monitored Jali closely, has signed him on a one-year contract with an option for an additional year.

While he predominantly played as a right back and centre back, in Chippaโ€™s last match against Marumo Gallants, he was utilised as a defensive midfielder and delivered a commendable performance.

A source told FARPost, โ€œHe was obviously unhappy with the lack of game time after joining the club at the start of the season. He had hoped to play a significant role, but that didnโ€™t materialise. He believes he will get more playing time at Highbury and further develop his skills.โ€

WHAT KIND OF PLAYER IS SAMKELO JALI

Jali, who made his senior team debut with Uthongathi FC a few years ago, was among the best centre-backs in the DDC. He displayed qualities such as calmness, composure, and strength. Notably, he is comfortable on the ball, which allows him to play as a central defensive midfielder.

He will be hoping for regular game time at the Eastern Cape-based Highbury. In their first season in the second tier, they finished ninth. They amassed 38 points, having won 10 games and drawn eight.

Highbury will be looking to strengthen their squad with more signings ahead of the 2025/26 Motsepe Foundation Championship season.
