AmaZulu FC have completed the signing of Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Darren Johnson to replace the outgoing Veli Mothwa.
Usuthu are making adjustments in their squad as they prepare for the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season. In the previous campaign, the KZN-based side finished in the top eight on the league table to qualify for next season’s MTN8.
AmaZulu have shown signs of improvement under the guidance of the former Kaizer Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane, who joined the club in October 2024 as the co-coach alongside Vusumuzi Vilakazi.
After Vilakazi’s resignation, Zwane took over as the sole head coach and guided the team to a sixth-place finish on the log standings.
CHIPPA UNITED SNATCH TALENTED GOALKEEPER DARREN JOHNSON
With AmaZulu looking to build a competitive squad for next season, they’ve snatched the talented goalie Darren Johnson from Chippa United.
The 28-year-old will join AmaZulu on a free transfer, with his contract with the Chilli Boys set to expire on June 30, 2025.
Johnson played second fiddle to Stanley Nwabali, but he has proven his qualities whenever he’s called upon in the starting line-up for the Chilli Boys.
The former Cape Town Spurs goalkeeper featured in five appearances for Chippa, and he earned a Bafana Bafana call-up in the national team that’s currently participating in the COSAFA Cup in Bloemfontein. Johnson will replace experienced goalie Veli Mothwa, who will leave the Sandile Zungu-owned team at the end of this month.
Mothwa has been with AmaZulu for five seasons after joining the club in November 2020 from Chippa United.
The Pretoria-born keeper is in talks to re-unite with his former club Chippa for the upcoming season. The 34-year-old will compete with Nwabili for the number one spot between the sticks at the Eastern Cape-based outfit.
