Ex-Spurs coach Connor claims first trophy in Botswana

Former Cape Town Spurs coach Sean Connor

Former Cape Town Spurs coach Sean Connor won his first trophy in Botswana just a week after joining Jwaneng Galaxy on a two-year contract.

The Irish mentor guided Galaxy to a 2-0 win over Security Systems in the Orange FA Cup final on Friday night at the National Stadium in Gaborone.

Connor succeeded Dutchman Pieter De Jongh, who had recently replaced Morena Ramoreboli, the head coach of the Botswana national team.

After failing to defend the league title, Galaxy parted ways with De Jongh and appointed Connor, who had spent the season at Matebele, another team in the Botswana Premier League.

At Matebele, Connor, who served as technical director at Spurs, concluded a successful season by leading the team to the semi-finals of the Orange FA Cup. Interestingly, the mining outfit, Galaxy, beat Connorโ€™s Matebele in the semi-final of the annual knockout competition.

SEAN CONNOR EYEING CAF CONFEDERATION CUP SUCCESS

Winning the Orange Cup guarantees Galaxy a place in next season’s CAF Confederation Cup. They will be joining teams such as Kaizer Chiefs and Wydad Casablanca in the competition.

The goals for Galaxy were scored by Zimbabwean midfielder Nqobizitha Masuku and Thabang Sesinyi. This cup victory serves as consolation after their failure to defend the league title, ultimately finishing in fourth place for the season.

โ€œWinning this trophy is incredibly exciting for me. Iโ€™ve just joined the club. But I understand that my real work begins now,โ€ Connor told FARPost.

โ€œWe need to strengthen the squad to contend for the league title again and compete in CAF. Fresh talent is essential. Nevertheless, Iโ€™m thrilled with last nightโ€™s victory and look forward to the upcoming season.โ€
