Former Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach Romain Folz has completed a rescue mission at Algerian club Olympique Akbou and now faces a major decision on his future.
After parting ways with Sundowns in December, Folz was involved with FIFA.
In March, Folz assumed control of the struggling Kabylia club, which was teetering on the edge of relegation. Appointed as sporting director while also serving as head coach, he stepped in at a critical moment when the club was facing significant challenges.
Due to his agreement with FIFA, the Frenchman never sat on the bench. Initially, Folz was to take over in the new season.
However, due to the clubโs precarious situation, an early start was agreed upon, aiming to save the team from relegation. Under Folz, the club secured crucial points against CS Constantine, USM Alger and even claimed victory over MC Alger, the current log leaders and quarter-finalists in the CAF Champions League.

ROMAIN FOLZ FACED WITH BIG OLYMPIQUE AKBOU DECISION
With two games left in the season, Akbou has secured its spot in the Algerian Ligue 1 for the 2025/26 seasonโan achievement that seemed unlikely just three months ago.
The management at Akbou has reportedly made a tempting offer to Folzโs representatives to retain his services for the next season.
However, it remains uncertain whether Folz will continue with the club, as he is rumoured to have attracted interest from elsewhere. Known as โFohlozaโ, the former AmaZulu FC and Marumo Gallants mentor is among the few coaches globally holding dual PRO licenses [UEFA and CONMEBOL].
Meanwhile, the 34-year-old will look to finish the season strong in the North African country. Akbou play El Bayadh on Tuesday before concluding the season with a clash against Sead Ramovic and Khanyisa Mayoโs CR Belouizdad on June 20.
