Mpho Makola shares thoughts on Mako, Monyane switch to Chiefs

Thabiso Monyane in Orlando Pirates colours

Former Orlando Pirates star Mpho Makola has reacted to Kaizer Chiefs’ move to sign Paseka Mako and Thabiso Monyane. Though Chiefs are yet to announce any new signings, it has emerged that the club has snapped up the talented duo after Pirates released them. The Glamour Boys are set to conduct their pre-season training camp in the Netherlands.

Mako, an experienced left-back, reportedly agreed to a three-year deal with Chiefs, effective on the 1st of July. He will battle for game time against the likes of Bradley Cross and Happy Mashiane.

Meanwhile, Monyane’s arrival strengthens the level of competition in the right-back position, which already has Dillan Solomons and Reeve Frosler. After struggling with injuries last season, Monyane will be itching to prove himself to Chiefs fans.

There is a sense of scepticism among the Amakhosi faithful, considering how another Pirates reject, Bongani Sam, flopped last season. But Makola is sure Mako and Monyane will live up to the billing.

WHAT MAKOLA SAID ABOUT PASEKA MAKO AND THABISO MONYANE

In an interview with FARPost, Makola said Chiefs’ move to sign Mako and Monyane was a masterstroke. The former Pirates and Cape Town City FC midfielder is confident the duo will fit in with Nasreddine Nabi’s play.

“It’s unfortunate that they left Pirates. I rate them highly; they are exceptional players in terms of character and quality. The level of competition at the team [Pirates] is high, but that does not mean they are not good enough. Some players will obviously be sacrificed,” Makola said.

“I know for sure that Chiefs will get more from these boys. They will bring more competition to the team. From the way I see it, they are still going to face the same positional competition at Chiefs.

“A team like Chiefs needs those kinds of players, those that have the mindset of winners and the never-say-die attitude. It’s a master stroke move.”

Both Mako and Monyane struggled for game time last season. Mako started just 12 league matches. In addition, Monyane struggled with injuries.

He played second fiddle to the impressive Deano van Rooyen since his arrival from Stellenbosch FC. The 25-year-old managed 12 appearances last season.
