Harambee Stars defender Brian Onyango faces an uncertain future at Stellenbosch FC, with his contract set to expire at the end of June.

The Kenya international joined Stellies on a one-year deal following his exit from Mamelodi Sundowns at the end of last season.

The 30-year-old’s appearances for the Winelands outfit have been limited. Onyango made eight appearances across all competitions, including two in the CAF Confederation Cup, where the Cape Town club reached the semi-finals of the interclub competition.

While the club holds an option of a year to extend the former Maritzburg United defender’s contract, indications are that the club has opted against extending his stay. As he approaches the end of his contract on June 30, Onyango will become a free agent, allowing him to seek out a new club.

The veteran defender, who started his career with Posta Rangers and Tusker back in Kenya, also had stints with Santos and Maritzburg before spending four years at Sundowns.

WHY STELLENBOSCH FC WOULDN’T BE CONCERNED BY BRIAN ONYANGO’S EXIT

Stellenbosch head coach Steve Barker relied on Bafana Bafana defender Thabo Moloisane and Ivory Coast defender Olivier Toure in central defence. Athenkosi Mcaba also played a significant number of matches in that position, limiting Onyango’s opportunities on the field.

Mcaba, a 23-year-old left-footed defender, made 18 starts across all competitions and five substitute appearances, underscoring his importance to Barker’s squad.

Meanwhile, 20-year-old defender Tylon Smith, who shone at the AFCON Under-20 tournament, is set to be promoted to the senior team.

Smith, who was crowned Player of the Tournament at the AFCON, has appeared on the bench twice in the CAF Confederation Cup and seems poised to be integrated into the team in the near future. There is also Liam de Kock, who featured thrice for the club in the CAF Confederation Cup.
