Cape Town Spurs have dropped their High Court application against Durban City FC, marking a significant development in the ongoing saga.
A few weeks ago, Spurs filed an application at the High Court to challenge the decision by the PSL DC to dismiss their protest against Durban City.
The Urban Warriors played their final match of the Motsepe Foundation Championship season against Durban City under protest, arguing that midfielder Saziso Magawana is improperly registered.
In that match, the KZN-based side claimed a 1-0 victory over Spurs to seal automatic promotion to the Betway Premiership. After their promotion, PSL made a decision to delay the trophy handover until the case is resolved.
After the ruling went in favour of Durban City, they were subsequently handed the NFD trophy at the SuperSport TV studios over a week ago.
This came after CT Spurs initially had their bid dismissed by the PSL’s Dispute Resolution Chamber, which was overseen by Raymond Hack. The chamber dismissed Spurs’ appeal and ordered them to cover the associated costs.
Following this setback, the Cape side escalated the matter to SAFA arbitration. During the SAFA arbitration process, several arbitrators recused themselves from the case. Ultimately, it was Hilton Epstein SC who ruled in favour of Durban City and Sazi Magawana.
CAPE TOWN SPURS DROP CASE AGAINST DURBAN CITY
In a bid to challenge Durban City’s promotion, CT Spurs took the matter to the High Court, looking to interdict the promotion. Moreover, CT Spurs had been banking on the Farook Kadodia-owned team being docked points, a penalty that would have saved Spurs from relegation to the ABC Motsepe League.

Spurs have now decided to drop the court application in a surprising turn of events. In a document seen by FARPost, Cape Town Spurs dropped the case and accepted their fate to participate in the third tier of South African football.
Spurs struggled for consistent winning form in the Motsepe Foundation, which saw them finish 15th on the league table to drop down to the ABC Motsepe League.
Last season, they collected 30 points in 30 games after registering six wins, drawing 12, and losing on 12 occasions.
Meanwhile, the popular club, which gained prominence through producing some of the best talent in the country, was relegated alongside Leruma United, who finished at the bottom of the log.
