Mako and Monyane accused of betrayal after joining Chiefs

Thabiso Monyane at Orlando Pirates

Orlando Pirates legend Moeneeb Josephs has accused Thabiso Monyane and Paseka Mako of betrayal after making a switch to arch rival Kaizer Chiefs.

The duo reportedly completed their moves to Chiefs as free agents after parting ways with the Buccaneers, with their contracts expiring at the end of June 2025.

Amakhosi quickly snapped up Monyane and Mako to form part of Nasreddine Nabiโ€™s squad for the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season. The new campaign will also see the 2025 Nedbank Cup champions return to continental football in the CAF Confederation Cup.

The experienced left-back, Mako, was one of the long-serving members of the Pirates team, having signed for the club from Chippa United in 2018. In his seven seasons with the Sea Robbers, he made 173 appearances in all competitions, scored two goals, and contributed eight assists.

On the other hand, Monyane came through the Pirates’ development structures after gaining promotion to the first team in the 2019/20 season. However, the talented right-back had a limited time on the pitch due to persistent injuries at Pirates.

Both players won several trophies at the Soweto giants, including the Nedbank Cup and MTN8.

WHAT MOENEEB JOSEPHS SAID ABOUT MONYANE AND MAKO

While Monyane and Mako aim to reignite their careers at Chiefs, their move has drawn strong condemnation from former Pirates goalkeeper Josephs.

He slammed the duo for crossing the Soweto Derby divide, even though such transfers are not unprecedented.

โ€œThe boys these days go where thereโ€™s money. I wanted to make a video the other day and say thanks to the boys for everything, but I saw where they went [Chiefs],โ€ Josephs said on Soccer Beat.

โ€œI mean, these boys donโ€™t have ambitions after crossing the road like that. The team on the yellow side will be posting our players. Thereโ€™s no loyalty in this game anymore and pride for the badge anymore.โ€

Mako and Monyane are set to join the Glamour Boys on their pre-season tour to the Netherlands as they gear up for the highly anticipated new season. Amakhosiย returned from the off-season break on Friday, 20 June, with Nabi leading the proceedings at the Kaizer Chiefs Village in Naturena.
