Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams has detailed the circumstances that led to his costly blunder during the recent FIFA Club World Cup match against Borussia Dortmund.
The group stage game between Bafana Ba Style and the eight-time Bundesliga champions took place at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio on Saturday night.
This mouthwatering showdown ended in a 4-3 scoreline in favour of Dortmund, who came back from one goal down. Felix Nmecha, Serhou Guirassy, Jobe Bellingham, and an own goal by Khuliso Mudau were enough to earn the German side maximum points.
Meanwhile, Lucas Ribeiro, Iqraam Rayners, and Lebo Mothiba were on the scoresheet for Masandawana.
In the 16th minute of the game, Bafana Bafana captain Williams made a schoolboy error with a back pass that landed on Nmecha’s foot, with the Manchester City FC product capitalising on the goalie’s mistake.

WHAT RONWEN WILLIAMS SAID ABOUT HIS COSTLY ERROR
He explained that he had initially spotted his teammate, Teboho Mokoena, as an option for a pass. However, Mokoena then moved away after receiving a call from Marcelo Allende, disrupting Williams’ intended play just as he was about to release the ball.
“It’s not nice to concede a goal like that. But you know, we are a team that takes risks. So, before I received the ball, I obviously saw ‘Tebza’ there, but he got a call from Marcelo Allende to move away. It was just one of those unfortunate situations. But we learn from it, and we keep going,” said Williams.
“However, we showed that we can compete. Yes, obviously, they are physically bigger, but it’s all about the mind; if your mentality is right, you can go out there and compete with the best, and that’s what we showed.
“We had a very good chance in the first-half, and I’m just proud of the boys for their efforts and the desire to keep fighting. Now, the gap is not that big. I think we have proved that.”
