Former Orlando Pirates assistant coach Sergio Almenara has inked a deal to join European side FC Copenhagen, marking his third coaching position since leaving the Soweto giants.

In January 2025, Almenara assumed the role of head of scouting at Inter Turku. A few months later, the Spanish coach joined the Finnish National Team as the set-piece coach.

Before moving back to Europe, Almenara had a two-season stint at Pirates as an assistant coach to Jose Riveiro.

In his time with the Sea Robbers, the 45-year-old won two MTN8 titles and two Nedbank Cup trophies. Almenara left Pirates at the end of the 2023/24 season, citing ‘personal reasons’ for his departure.

The UEFA A License holder initially arrived in South Africa in July 2022 to form part of Riveiro’s technical team at Pirates. A year later, Riveiro also left the Buccaneers at the end of last season to take over the hot seat at the Egyptian giants Al Ahly.

The 49-year-old mentor left Pirates after the expiry of his contract, having spent three seasons at the helm.

On the other hand, Almenara has landed a big job after being named as the assistant coach of FC Copenhagen to work closely with head coach Jacob Neestrup.

The Danish giants will participate in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers, aiming to qualify for the prestigious tournament next season after winning the league title with 63 points in 32 matches.

The club has strengthened its technical team with Almenara to build a competitive team that can compete for major trophies.

Meanwhile, Sergio Almenara was heavily linked with a move to reunite with Jose Riveiro at Asl Ahly before joining Copenhagen.
