Motsepe Foundation Championship side Upington City FC has moved swiftly to appoint a new coach, Abram Mongoya, to replace Brandon Truter, who left the club at the end of last season.

Truter took over the coaching job at Upington City in December 2024, following a brief stint with Betway Premiership side Richards Bay FC.

The former Sekhukhune United mentor left the Natal Rich Boys, barely six months into the job, after taking over the helm at the start of the 2024/25 season.

Under the guidance of Truter, Upington City finished 12th on the league table in the previous campaign, falling short of their mission to gain promotion to the elite league.

‘Bafana Ba Gucci’ collected 35 points in 30 games after registering eight league matches, drawing 11, and losing 11 times. As part of the preparations for the upcoming season, Upington City have roped in Abram Mongoya to lead the club.

In his previous job, Mongoya turned Kruger United into one of the formidable sides in the second-tier as they fought for promotion to the Premiership.

The Mpumalanga-based side marginally missed out on a place in the PSL Promotion/Relegation Playoffs after dropping the ball in the closing stages of the season.

Mongoya will be looking to hit the ground running with Upington as they continue their fight to gain promotion to the SA top-flight.

Meanwhile, Upington have already parted ways with players such as Promise Mkhuma, Tlotlo Leepile, Solly Khunyedi, and Kyle Peters as part of their rebuilding process for next season.
