Kruger United are closing in on the appointment of former AmaZulu FC co-coach Vusumuzi Vilakazi, FARPost has learnt.

The Mpumalanga-based club recently parted company with Abram Mongoya, who was in charge of the team in the Motsepe Foundation Championship last season.

Under Mongoya’s guidance, Kruger United became one of the most formidable teams in the second division, mounting a strong challenge for promotion to the Betway Premiership.

Despite their impressive run, the Mpumalanga-based club just missed out on a place in the PSL Promotional/Relegation Playoffs, after faltering in the crucial final stages of the season.

Kruger United concluded their inaugural season in the Championship with a commendable fifth-place finish.

The club, which was promoted from the ABC Motsepe League, amassed 45 points from 30 games. Their successful debut campaign saw them secure 12 wins, nine draws, and suffer nine defeats, marking a strong start in the division.

Mongoya has officially taken the reins at Upington City FC, with his appointment formally announced on Wednesday this week.

VILAKAZI LOOKS SET TO TAKE OVER AT KRUGER UNITED

According to FARPost sources, Kruger and Vilakaziโ€™s camp are in advanced talks with the club, hoping to quickly secure the coachโ€™s services, with the team set to return for pre-season.

โ€˜Kanuโ€™, as heโ€™s affectionately known, abruptly left AmaZulu in February after tendering his resignation, citing personal issues.

The resignation marked the end of the co-coaching arrangement between him and Arthur Zwane, which commenced in October last year with their joint appointment as successors to Pablo Franco Martin, who was relieved of his duties in September.

Vilakazi had initially joined the Durban-based club as the DStv Diski Challenge [DDC] head coach in August prior to being promoted to the first team.

Apart from AmaZulu, the 42-year-old coach has previously coached Golden Arrows and Richards Bay FC.
