Kruger United cut ties with former Sundowns defender

Nicholus Lukhubeni with Sundowns

As PSL teams are gearing up for the 2025/26 season, Kruger United have cut ties with former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Nicholus Lukhubeni.

The right-back spent the previous season in the Motsepe Foundation Championship with Kruger after parting ways with Mamelodi Sundowns in August 2024.

Lukhubeni left his boyhood club Sundowns after struggling to break into the star-studded starting line-up. The 29-year-old came through the Brazilians’ development ranks in 2019 under the then-head coach Pitso Mosimane; however, he could not feature regularly in the team.

After his struggles for game time at Downs, Lukhubeni was sent out on loan to teams such as Sekhukhune United, Maritzburg United, Moroka Swallows, and Cape Town Spurs.

Lukhubeni, who has 85 appearances in the top-flight across all competitions, was looking to revive his career at the Mpumalanga-based side; however, he couldnโ€™t establish himself as a regular starter.

After making five league appearances for Kruger United, Lukhubeni has been released by the club following the expiration of his contract.

The wing-back spent six months with Kruger United after joining in November 2024 on a short-term deal as a free agent. Nicholus Lukhubeni is back on the market searching for a new club before the start of the upcoming season.

Meanwhile, Kruger are looking to build a strong team after their promising maiden season in the second division. They gained promotion to the NFD from the ABC Motsepe League at the start of the last campaign.

As reported by FARPost, Kruger are in talks with Vusumuzi Vilakazi to take over the coaching role after Abram Mongoya jumped ship to join Upington City FC. In addition, theyโ€™ve also shortlisted Brandon Truter for a technical director role to beef up their backroom staff and push for automatic promotion next season.
