Zizwe clinch Motsepe League playoff berth after decisive replay

Western Cape ABC Motsepe League champions Zizwe United FC

Zizwe United have emerged as the SAFA Western Cape ABC Motsepe League overall champions. They secured the title by defeating Hanover Park FC 2-1 in a provincial decider on Sunday afternoon.

The decisive match unfolded at the Ocean View Sports Field in Cape Town. This showdown was a replay, necessitated after Zizwe United won their arbitration against SAFA Western Cape. The arbitration concerned the selection of match officials for last month’s initial Motsepe League provincial tie against Hanover Park.

In the first provincial decider clash, Hanover Park won the game 4-2 via a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw in regulation time, which was played on Saturday, May 17, at Cloetesville Sports Ground in Stellenbosch.

Zizwe claimed that the referees chosen for the first provincial playoffs match against Hanover Park were picked by Abdul Ebrahim [SAFA head of referees], who had no power to do so.

The side argued that Luvuyo Phuphuma is the sole individual authorised to appoint referees, as he is the official referee coordinator for SAFA Western Cape.

ZIZWE UNITED TO REPRESENT WESTERN CAPE AT ABC MOTSEPE LEAGUE NATIONAL PLAYOFFS

As a result, Zizwe will represent the Western Cape at the upcoming ABC Motsepe League National Playoffs set to be held in Gauteng province. The national playoffs will start on Tuesday, 1 July, and will come to an end on Sunday, 6 July 2025.

The national playoffs group stage matches will take place at the Giant Stadium in Soshanguve, while the semi-finals and final are planned to be held at Lucas Moripe Stadium, located in Atteridgeville.

Zizwe joins African Warriors [Free State], Midlands Wanderers [KZN], The Bees [Mpumalanga], Kakamas Juventus [Northern Cape], Gomora United [Gauteng], FC Ravens [Eastern Cape, pending DC outcome], and Thames FC [North West], who have qualified for the SA third-tier national playoffs.

At this year’s national playoffs, three teams will secure automatic promotion to the Motsepe Foundation Championship, instead of two clubs, due to the expulsion of Royal AM from the PSL
