Ernst Middendorp close to shock return to Durban City

Former Cape Town Spurs coach Ernst Middendorp celebrating

Ernst Middendorp is nearing a shocking return to Durban City FC, the club where he previously served as head coach when they were known as Maritzburg United.

Ahead of their return to the Betway Premiership, the KZN outfit is assembling their technical team.

The club recently announced the exit of the man who guided them to promotion by winning the Motsepe Foundation Championship, Simo Dladla. Dladla began work as AmaZulu FC assistant coach on Monday and will work closely with Arthur Zwane.

Meanwhile, Durban City have already lined up Gavin Hunt as their next coach and are finalising that deal. Now, FARPost has established that the Durban-based club has offered Middendorp a role within the club.

The former Kaizer Chiefs and Moroka Swallows coach recently led Cape Town Spurs to relegation from the Motsepe Foundation Championship, finishing 15th after the 2024/25 season with six wins, 12 draws, and 12 losses.

The previous season [2023/24], he guided the CT Spurs out of the Betway Premiership. As a result, the ABC Motsepe League will be the new home for CT Spurs, the club previously known as Ajax Cape Town, until September 2020.

WHAT ROLE WILL ERNST MIDDENDORP PLAY AT DURBAN CITY FC?

The German coach is being considered for the position of technical director, a role that would work closely with Hunt.

The 66-year-oldโ€™s responsibility would be to oversee the strategic and technical development of the club. His duties would include overseeing player development, scouting, and shaping the club’s football philosophy. The experienced coach will also focus on long-term sustainability and success at Durban City.

His goal will be to ensure the teamโ€™s playing style, coaching approach, and recruitment strategies align with Durban Cityโ€™s future vision.
