Durban City FC set to sign Upington attacker Mokwena
Newly promoted Betway Premiership outfit Durban City FC is set to sign Upington City FC’s highly-rated attacker Bokang Mokwena.
The KZN-based side gained promotion to the elite league after winning the Motsepe Foundation Championship title last season. Upington City, formerly known as Maritzburg United, had an impressive run in the NFD under the guidance of Simo Dladla, securing automatic promotion to the SA top-flight.
Following their promotion to the Premiership, Durban City parted ways with Dladla despite guiding the team to promotion.
Upington City are poised to appoint Gavin Hunt as their new head coach, while Ernst Middendorp is set to take over the technical director role, as previously reported by FARPost.
With the Durban outfit preparing to compete in South Africa’s top-flight, they are finalising a move for Upington City star Bokang Mokwena. The talented winger was one of the best players for Bafana Ba Gucci after scoring 12 goals in 29 league games in the Championship last season.
In the 2023/24 campaign, Mokwena scored the same number of goals in 28 league appearances, demonstrating his goal-scoring abilities and consistency.
UPINGTON CITY FC AGREES TO SELL BOKANG MOKWENA TO DURBAN CITY
After making a huge impact at Upington City, the 24-year-old will play his football in the top division after the two clubs, Upington City and Durban City, agreed on a transfer fee.
A source close to the information revealed that Upington City has agreed to sell their key player, Mokwena, to Durban City.
“Bokang Mokwena will definitely play for Durban City next season because Upington City agreed for the transfer to go ahead,” a source said.
“Mokwena is a very talented player who can play on both wings, and he can also play behind the striker, hence he’s been scoring goals regularly.
“So I think for people who haven’t gotten a chance to watch him, he’s a very skilful and pacey player and on his day he can be a thorn to defenders.”
Meanwhile, AmaZulu FC also approached Upington City for the services of Mokwena; however, the two clubs could not agree on a transfer fee.
