Siwelele FC acquisition: What’s next for SuperSport United personnel?

Stan Matthews, who was a CEO for SuperSport during TV interview

Following the sale of SuperSport United’s top-flight status to Siwelele FC, an update has emerged regarding the futures of the Matsatsantsa CEO, players, and staff.

The acquisition of Matsatsantsa by Siwelele FC was officially confirmed by the club on Thursday, pending approval by the PSL Executive Committee.

This deal marks the end of a 30-year era for the Tshwane giants, who were once a dominant force in the PSL, having won the league three times consecutively during their peak under the guidance of Gavin Hunt.

The sale was necessitated by the financial difficulties SuperSport have reportedly faced in recent seasons, which had effectively turned them into a selling club for players.

Rumours of SuperSport’s sale circulated persistently throughout the entire previous campaign, a season during which the club notably found itself struggling in the relegation zone.

Fortunately, the club managed to avoid the PSL Promotional/Relegation Playoffs matches on the very last day of the season, thanks to a crucial draw against Golden Arrows.

STAN MATTHEWS, PLAYERS & MAJORITY OF STAFF TO BE RETAINED

According to sources close to the club, CEO Stan Matthews, players, and the majority of the staff are set to relocate with the club to Bloemfontein, Free State.

Siwelele, who’ll be competing in the Betway Premiership next season, will join another top-flight rival, Marumo Gallants, in Bloemfontein. The Abram Sello-owned side arrived last season, relocating from Limpopo.

Gallants, just like Siwelele, purchased a status from another historic PSL club, Moroka Swallows, to make their way back to the top-flight. They then sold their Motsepe Foundation Championship status to Leruma United, who have since been relegated to the ABC Motsepe League.

Bahlabane Ba Ntwa have been utilising the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium and Free Stadium as their home venues. Siwelele are likely to share these venues with Gallants.

‘Siwelele’ are also yet to confirm their head coach. Andre Arendse was leading SuperSport as an interim coach towards the end of the last season.
