Cassius Mailula addresses potential PSL return

Former Wydad Casablanca and Bafana Bafana striker Cassius Mailula has addressed the potential of returning to the PSL for the upcoming season.

The talented forward recently announced his exit from Wydad after spending the 2024/25 campaign in the Botola Pro in Morocco.

Mailula joined the Moroccan giants ahead of the previous season under Rulani Mokwena, looking to secure regular game time. The Limpopo-born striker and Mokwena worked together during their time at Mamelodi Sundowns over two seasons ago.

Mailula had an impressive stint in the 2022/23 season at Sundowns after gaining promotion from the club’s DStv Diski Challenge [DDC] side.

In that season, the 24-year-old made 31 appearances in all competitions for Sundowns, scoring 15 goals and providing four assists. He won the Young Player of the Season in the 2023 PSL awards.

After setting the PSL alight, Mailula completed a move to Toronto FC in the Major League Soccer [MLS]; however, his move didnโ€™t turn out well after struggling to break into the starting line-up.

WHAT MAILULA SAID ABOUT POTENTIAL PSL RETURN

Having gone out on loan last season, Mailula is set to return to his parent club, Toronto, and itโ€™s unclear whether the team will keep him, given his limited impact at the club.

Speaking on his future on Metro FM, the pacey forward revealed that if there are possibilities of returning to South Africa, Sundowns will always be his first option.

โ€œObviously, you can’t block the opportunity to come back home, it also depends on what the clubs are offering and what their plan is with me,โ€ Mailula said.

โ€œI wouldnโ€™t say Iโ€™m closing that door [to PSL return] because you never know what would happen in football. So for me, it would be nice, but I know that Iโ€™m very ambitious; my goal is still to go to Europe.

โ€œSo thatโ€™s why I say I wouldnโ€™t close that door, but Iโ€™m still contracted to Toronto and I have to respect them, but at home, I love Sundowns.

โ€œI think even the chairman and the president know that Sundowns is my first love, and before I can think of any move at home, Iโ€™ll think of Sundowns. If things donโ€™t go well with negotiations, then I can start to think of other teams. Sundowns is my home.โ€
