Chiefs launch women’s team partnership ahead of CAF CC participation

Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed a new partnership with a women’s football team ahead of their participation in the CAF Confederation Cup.

The Phefeni Glamour Boys will take part in the continental football in the upcoming season after securing the qualification by virtue of winning the 2025 Nedbank Cup in May.

CAF’s club licensing regulations stipulate that clubs must either operate a women’s team or have an official partnership with one to be eligible for interclub competitions.

Stellenbosch FC, during their first-ever CAF Confederation Cup appearance last season, teamed up with the Stellenbosch University Women’s Team. Meanwhile, in 2023, Orlando Pirates forged a partnership with UJ Ladies upon their return to the CAF Champions League.

Chiefs have now partnered with Springs Home Sweepers Football Club, who are owned by Joseph ‘Skeshekeshe’ Mkhonza, a former Amakhosi player, and father of the late Siphiwe Mkhonza, who also turned out for the Soweto giants.

Home Sweepers participate in the Gauteng Sasol League. They are based in Springs and play their home matches at Kwa Thema Stadium.

The club’s chairman, Dr Kaizer Motaung, said this partnership is a testament to their commitment to contributing to the growth of women’s football in South Africa.

“I am excited to see this partnership coming to fruition. Equally, I am happy that finally we have an agreement with the women’s team, Home Sweepers, owned by our very own Kaizer Chiefs legend, Joseph Mkhonza,” said Dr Motaung.

“This collaboration is a significant milestone for our club, as we continue to invest in the development of women’s football in South Africa.

“We believe in empowering women in sport and providing opportunities for them to shine. This partnership is a testament to our commitment to growing the beautiful game and fostering a more inclusive sporting environment.

“We look forward to a successful partnership and to witnessing the incredible talent of these women on the pitch.”

Meanwhile, the club’s commercial and marketing director Jessica Motaung said, “We are thrilled to formalise this relationship with Home Sweepers. This partnership is about more than just football; it’s about creating a sustainable ecosystem for women’s football in South Africa.

“Aligning women’s clubs with professional structures like Chiefs is vital for the growth and professionalism of the women’s game, and we are proud to play a role in that journey.

“This partnership will not only benefit the players on the field but also contribute to the broader development of women’s football through shared resources, mentorship and visibility. We believe in the potential of this project and are committed to its success.”

Mkhonza, who previously coached Banyana Banyana, expressed their excitement over the new partnership.

“We’re extremely proud to partner with a club of Chiefs’ stature. Their involvement signals real intent and belief in the women’s game. This is also a great opportunity to grow our footprint in our area and continue to build a platform for young female talent to thrive,” said Mkhonza.
