John Comitis’ stance on buying status after CT City’s relegation

Following Cape Town City FC’s relegation to the Motsepe Foundation Championship, the club chairman, John Comitis, has revealed his stance on buying a top-flight status.

CT City’s relegation fate was finalised after suffering a 1-0 defeat in the PSL Promotional/Relegation Playoffs against Orbit College at Olympia Stadium last month.

The Mswenko Boys clinched promotion to the Betway Premiership after finishing at the top of the mini table in the playoffs.

Orbit College overpowered another NFD side, Casric Stars, and Cape Town City to secure their place in the elite league for the 2025/26 campaign.

Meanwhile, the Citizens’ drop to the second-tier came after a series of underwhelming results in the Premiership last season. CT City finished 15th on the league table with 27 points in 28 matches, having won seven games, drawn six, and lost 15 times.

WHAT JOHN COMITIS SAID ABOUT BUYING TOP-FLIGHT STATUS

After the Cape Town-based side failed to save their status in the playoffs, John Comitis has revealed that he will exhaust all possible options to stay in the top league.

“That [buying a status is always an option] because the PSL has allowed an entry and window for clubs to do that,” Comitits said on MSW.

“You know, at the end of the day, for me, it’s about providing a service for football players and getting them to the highest level. I’ve been doing it for 27 years, and it’s important that we have the right platform to be able to do that.

“I have 15 youth internationals in my academy now, and they don’t want to be playing for an NFD club; they want to be in the PSL club.

“We’ve created a lot of value in these players, and we run a business at the end of the day, but it’s a mutually beneficial business. Everybody is a winner when we have a successful player who comes through the ranks and makes it as a professional.

“So we’ve been servicing this industry for these years that I told you about, it’s a lot easier to do it at the PSL level because there’s an amount of funding and there’s exposure to create value for your players.

“All these don’t exist in the NFD, so it’s critical that we get back to the PSL, and the shortest route is the best route. We need a little bit of money for that.”
