Durban City FC have won the race to acquire the signature of striker Thabang Sibanyoni, fending off interest from three other PSL clubs. This move comes after Sibanyoni’s recent departure from Mamelodi Sundowns, as previously reported by FARPost, which also revealed that he was training with the newly promoted Betway Premiership side.
The 29-year-old forward’s departure from the Brazilians was confirmed earlier this week, announced alongside the exits of Sipho Mbule, Lucas Suarez, Sanele Tshabalala, and Sifiso Ngobeni. Sibanyoni, a product of Sundowns’ development system, was promoted to their senior team at the start of the 2019/20 season. During his tenure with Masandawana, he gained valuable experience through loan spells at SuperSport United, Pretoria University, Richards Bay, and most recently, Magesi FC.
His significant impact at Dikwena tลกa Meetse last season even prompted the club to offer him a permanent contract. Additionally, relegated Cape Town City also put forward an offer as they aim to bolster their squad for the upcoming Motsepe Foundation Championship season.
THABANG SIBANYONI IMPRESSES GAVIN HUNT, SET TO SIGN NEXT WEEK
Sibanyoni spent the past week training with Durban City under the watchful eye of Gavin Hunt, a known admirer of the player. His performance in a friendly match against Richards Bay on Friday particularly impressed the club’s technical team.

As a result, Durban City promptly offered him a contract, which Sibanyoni has agreed to sign in principle. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the talented forward is expected to formally pen the new deal early next week.
The club, formerly known as Maritzburg United, is also on the verge of securing Trevor Mokwena, a prolific scorer from Upington City, who bagged 12 goals and five assists in the second tier last season.
With a move for Lorenzo Gordinho now appearing unlikely, Durban City is reportedly shifting its focus to Gor Mahia centre-back, Alphonce Otieno Omija. While no formal discussions have commenced, the Farook Kadodia-owned club is keenly observing the Kenyan defender, who previously had a stint in Oman. Furthermore, the club is close to finalising a deal for Ghanaian goalkeeper Fredrick Asare, currently a free agent.
City’s proactive approach in the transfer market signals their intent to build a competitive squad for their return to the Betway Premiership.
