FARPost has learned that Rulani Mokwena turned down an offer to coach the newly acquired Siwelele FC, as Algerian giants MC Alger close in on the highly sought-after trainer.

This comes after SuperSport International recently confirmed the sale of its PSL club, SuperSport United, to Siwelele Football Club [Pty] Ltd.

The 38-year-old coach is currently unattached after mutually agreeing to terminate his contract with Morocco’s Wydad Athletic Club.

Mokwena has been in demand in recent months, having also snubbed approaches from Saudi Arabian second-tier team Al Jandal SC and Qatari Stars League club Al Shahaniya SC.

It’s understood that Mokwena ideally prefers a role with a CAF Champions League contender, aiming for a club where he can truly challenge himself and compete for major honours. While reigning African champions Pyramids FC of Egypt showed interest, talks stalled due to their existing contract with Krunoslav Jurcic. Zamalek also approached Mokwena, but he says he withdrew from negotiations upon discovering his mentor, Pitso Mosimane, was also a candidate for the position.

RULANI MOKWENA A FRONTRUNNER FOR MC ALGER JOB

The nine-time Algerian champions, Mouloudia Club d’Alger, are actively seeking a new coach to replace Khaled Ben Yahia, who has left the position. Ben Yahia managed 28 matches during his 195-day tenure, securing both the league title and the Super Cup.

While Manqoba Mngqithi was also shortlisted for the role, indications are strong that Mokwena is the frontrunner. With the new season kicking off in September, the Algiers-based club is eager to finalise their new coach before the end of the month. MC Alger has reportedly contacted Mokwena’s camp, and he is said to be keen on the project. Algerian sources suggest the two parties could meet within the coming week to finalise the move.

Recognising the crucial role the training facility plays in his team’s preparation, the club’s hierarchy has reportedly invited him to tour their training centre in the Zรฉralda suburb of Algiers. The centre boasts a state-of-the-art administrative block, accommodation, and training pitches.

A move to MCA would offer the talented coach an opportunity to return to Africa’s premier club competition, the Champions League, a stage he is familiar with from his numerous appearances with Sundowns.

As head coach of Masandawana, Mokwena notably won three league titles, the inaugural African Football League, and the Nedbank Cup. He was also a key part of Pitso Mosimaneโ€™s technical team when the Brazilians lifted the CAF Champions League title in 2016.
