Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Aubrey ‘Sense of Knowledge’ Lekwane has weighed in on the club’s latest acquisition, Oswin Appollis, explaining why he believes the midfielder will be a perfect fit for the Buccaneers.
The Bafana Bafana winger was recently unveiled as the Buccaneers’ latest signing, marking their ninth acquisition of the current transfer window. He has already joined the team in Spain for their pre-season, participating in friendly matches.
Orlando Pirates secured Appollis’s signature despite stiff competition from rivals Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns, both of whom were reportedly vying for the Polokwane City FC winger.
Appollis joins a host of new faces at the Soweto giants, including Tshepang Moremi, Sihle Nduli, Sipho Mbule, Yanela Mbuthuma, Tshepho Mashiloane, Nkosikhona Ndaba, Sinoxolo Kwayiba, Masindi Nemtajela and Kamogelo Sebelebele.

“The way he plays, his style suits Pirates’ play. He is also quick in terms of attacking and coming back to defend. He is also a good player in terms of technique and tactical,” Lekwane told FARPost.

“I foresee a lot of potential in him, and I hope he is not going to be ruled by fear. He will be a better player at Pirates.”
Meanwhile, the former Pirates midfielder Lekwane also believes that the club has brought in the right players. However, he clarifies that these acquisitions are not necessarily intended to challenge Sundowns for the league title, but rather to create crucial depth for their upcoming CAF Champions League campaign.
“Pirates didn’t sign players to compete with Sundowns but to improve the team. They also want to compete in all competitions, especially CAF [Champions League] as it is a bigger target these days than the league,” he added.
Pirates qualified for the CAF Champions League after finishing second in the Betway Premiership for a third successive season. They are joined by Sundowns, as well as Kaizer Chiefs and Stellenbosch FC, who will be participating in the Confederation Cup.
