Orlando Pirates have moved to set the record straight regarding reports of a R120 million offer from PSV Eindhoven for one of their key players, Relebohile Mofokeng.

The Soweto giants issued a statement on Wednesday to clarify the situation surrounding the reported bid for Mofokeng as they continue their pre-season preparations in Spain.

This comes a day after the attacking sensation, Mofokeng, garnered five nominations for his outstanding performance during the 2024/25 season. The 20-year-old was nominated for the prestigious PSL Footballer of the Season Award and the Betway Premiership Players’ Player of the Season, alongside Mamelodi Sundowns’ Lucas Ribeiro and Sekhukhune United’s Keletso Makgalwa.

Mofokeng’s impressive list of nominations also includes the Betway Premiership Young Player of the Season, the MTN8 Last Man Standing, and the Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player of the Year. This follows a successful 2023/24 campaign where he won both the Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player and the Young Player of the Season awards.

Last season, Mofokeng was a vital player for the Buccaneers, contributing significantly to their MTN8 victory, a second-place finish in the DStv Premiership, a run to the CAF Champions League semifinals, and a Nedbank Cup final appearance. Across all competitions, he featured in over 45 games, scoring 12 goals and providing 15 assists.

The Bafana Bafana international has previously been linked with moves to European powerhouses such as Barcelona and Rangers, following a trial with English Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers.

ORLANDO PIRATES SLAM “FALSE AND IRRESPONSIBLE” R120M MOFOKENG CLAIM

Following Mohau Nkota’s recent transfer to Saudi Pro League club Al Ettifaq, speculation intensified that Relebohile Mofokeng would be the next to depart, with reports suggesting PSV had submitted an offer exceeding R100 million.

However, Pirates have since vehemently denied these claims, condemning the report as “false and irresponsible.”

“Orlando Pirates Football Club has taken note of the article published by SoccerLaduma.com on Tuesday, 16 July 2025, titled: R120m For Mofokeng? How PSV’s Linked To Pirates Sensation,” reads the club statement.

“We wish to place it on record that no such offer has been received by the Club. The claims made in the article are not only false but also irresponsible and damaging. As a publication with a long-standing history in South African football, Soccer Laduma is expected to uphold the highest standards of journalism rooted in fact, accuracy, and responsibility. Unfortunately, in this instance, they have chosen sensationalism over truth.

“This type of reporting is not only misleading to the public but also serves as an unnecessary distraction aimed at unsettling both the player and the Club at a critical juncture in our preparations for the upcoming season.

“Orlando Pirates remains committed to the well-being of our players and will continue to act in their best interests. We call upon all media outlets to refrain from publishing unverified reports that seek to create instability for the sake of clicks.”
