Veteran Nigerian goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has given an update on his future after parting ways with Marumo Gallants last month.

The former Kaizer Chiefs shot-stopper had been with Gallants since the beginning of the last season. His tenure with ‘Bahlabane Ba Ntwa’ began when the club acquired the status from Moroka Swallows.

Akpeyi saw limited action, featuring in just seven matches across all competitions for the Bloemfontein-based side. His progress was significantly hampered by an injury spell, but even when fit, he found himself on the sidelines at times.

Akpeyi was among over ten players who left the club at the end of the 2024/25 season.

He has revealed that he wants to continue playing and is actively looking for a new club, hoping to embark on a new journey ahead of the new season.

While seeking his next club, Akpeyi has been diligently pursuing his goalkeeper coaching qualifications. He’s already secured his CAF D Licence and wants to acquire further coaching badges.

AKPEYI STILL OPEN TO PLAY, BUT CURRENTLY DOING COACHING BADGES

“My aim is to work as a goalkeeper coach, so I’m trying to get certificates,” said Akpeyi, speaking with FARPost. “I’m now done with my [CAF] D Licence.”

Akpeyi confirmed that there are already second-tier clubs interested in securing his services. The experienced goalkeeper stated he is only looking to join a club that is fully prepared to fight for promotion to the top-flight league.

“There are quite a few interests, so I’m just trying to consider them [all],” he added. “There’s interest from the lower division. So, we’re trying to see what are the chances.

“I’m open to work with the team that is ready [to fight] for promotion.”

Having arrived in South Africa in 2015, Akpeyi has turned out for four clubs in the PSL – Chippa United, Kaizer Chiefs, the now-defunct Moroka Swallows and Marumo Gallants.
