Aphelele Teto poised to be Sundowns’ first signing

Mamelodi Sundowns are close to reaching an agreement with talented forward Aphelele Teto, who could become their first signing of the transfer window, FARPost has been informed.

Reports suggest that Teto and Scottish club Livingston FC have agreed to part ways after another attempt to secure a visa was unsuccessful.

Teto joined Livingston in 2023 on a four-year deal after impressing the club during a tour with TS Galaxy in Europe. However, visa issues prevented his immediate move to the William Hill Premiership side.

Last season, the 22-year-old was loaned to Chippa United, which brought him closer to realising his European dream, as he earned two caps for Bafana Bafana. Notably, he played in the CHAN qualifiers against Egypt.

According to the Scottish FA, foreign players seeking work permits in Scotland must meet specific criteria, including a minimum percentage of national team caps and a specified FIFA World ranking.

If a player doesn’t meet these automatic standards, the club can appeal to an Exceptions Panel, which considers the player’s experience and overall value. Despite his international appearances, efforts to secure a visa for Livingston have continued to face challenges.

Following the visa rejection, Sundowns have decided to sign him on what is thought to be a permanent deal. Livingston will, however, continue to monitor his progress for future opportunities.

Concerns about his frequent loans influencing his career path contributed to the decision by Sundowns to sign him permanently. Teto primarily plays as a right winger but can also operate on the left wing.

Born in East London, he started his career in the Carlos Soccer Youth Development programme before joining Bidvest Wits’ youth ranks and later TS Galaxy.

The Tshwane giants are also reportedly interested in TS Galaxy’s left-footed centre-back Khulumani Ndamane.

Ndamane had a breakthrough season last year after moving from Kaizer Chiefs’ youth setup. He went on to win Man of the Match in his Bafana Bafana debut against the Taifa Stars of Tanzania in an international friendly played in June.

Following his impressive performance in Polokwane, Bafana coach Hugo Broos praised the 21-year-old defender. “He has enormous potential. His composure, aerial ability, and physicality make him a perfect fit for top-level football,” Broos said.

After Lucas Suarez departed from Masandawana following his loan spell last season, the club is now considering signing Ndamane. They still have Mosa Lebusa, who will turn 33 in October, but played in fewer than half of the team’s matches last season.
