Daine Klate expected to take up Durban City role

Former SuperSport United and Orlando Pirates winger Daine Klate is expected to take up a role at newly promoted Durban City FC. After a successful playing career, Klate is now carving a niche as a coach.

The 40-year-old coach began his coaching journey with his hometown club Chippa United, though his tenure was brief, lasting only seven matches. He then coached NB La Masia during their stint in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

But he has not held any coaching position since leaving La Masia in April 2024.

As Durban City FC prepares for its return to the Betway Premiership after winning the second-tier title last campaign under the guidance of Simo Dladla, FARPost sources indicate that Klate is in talks with the club.

Recently, Durban City appointed Gavin Hunt, whom Klate greatly admires and regards as a mentor. Hunt was instrumental during Klateโ€™s playing days at SuperSport. Ernst Middendorp has been appointed as the clubโ€™s technical director.

WHAT ROLE IS DURBAN CITY FC EARMARKING DAINE KLATE FOR?

โ€œThey want him to work with the DDC team, and it does look like they will reach an agreement,โ€ a source told FARPost.

While his focus will be in the DStv Diski Challenge [DDC] ย team, the expectation is that he will work closely with Hunt. The club reportedly aims to facilitate an easy transition for its youth players to top-flight football, hence Middendorp’s involvement.

Meanwhile, the Durban team announced the signing of former Cape Town City FC goalkeeper Darren Keet, Liam De Kock, Fredrick Asare, Trevor Mokwena from Upington City FC, and Brooklyn Poggenpoel, formerly of SuperSport.

Some of the experienced players training with the club include Haashim Domingo, Thabo Nodada, Thulani Hlatshwayo, and Thabang Sibanyoni.
