Experienced forward Thembi Kgatlana has broken her silence following her withdrawal from the Banyana Banyana squad for the CAF 2024 WAFCON tournament, which is currently ongoing in Morocco.
Banyana travelled to Morocco, missing their key frontwoman, Kgatlana, as her absence is said to be due to undisclosed personal reasons.
Kgatlana’s withdrawal from the national team came as a shock to many football fanatics, given the influence she possesses in the Banyana set-up, which includes goal-scoring ability, experience, and leadership skills.
The 29-year-old was part of the Banyana squad that won the 2022 WAFCON tournament; however, she was ruled out of the competition after tearing her Achilles tendon during a group stage victory against Botswana.
The former CAF African Women’s Footballer of the Year is currently plying her trade in Mexico for Tigres UANL Femenil.

Kgatlana revealed that her absence from the South African Women’s National Team was due to her “pre-arranged leave” of absence from the beautiful game.
She further acknowledged that it was sad to watch Banyana play the continental showpiece back home in SA. Desiree Ellis’ charges were eliminated from the WAFCON tournament in the semi-finals following their 2-1 loss to the Super Falcons of Nigeria on Tuesday.
“It was difficult for me to watch Banyana Banyana exit WAFCON 2024 from the sidelines, but I am proud of the girls’ fight and achievement,” said Kgatlana.
“My absence from the tournament has drawn speculation, but I want to simply clarify that I am taking a pre-arranged leave of absence from all football for personal reasons. I love representing my country and will do so again in the future.
“To Tigres fans concerned that I have not returned to Mexico, I will see you all again very soon and will continue to give my all for the shirt. There is nothing to worry about and no deeper story. Thank you for all the concerns.”
