Kaitano Tembo declined an offer to join Gavin Hunt’s coaching staff at newly promoted Durban City FC. Tembo was targeted for a reunion with Hunt, who brought him to South Africa nearly three decades ago.
Hunt, the former SuperSport United coach, recently took over as head coach of the 2024/25 Motsepe Foundation Championship champions, succeeding Simo Dladla. Dladla has now joined AmaZulu FC as an assistant to Arthur Zwane.
The PSLโs longest-serving coach is assembling his technical team at Durban ย City. He has also appointed Rowan Fernandez as goalkeeper coach. The two previously worked together at the now-defunct SuperSport United, where Fernandez was a player.
Tembo spent most of his playing career at SuperSport United, retiring in 2006. Hunt, who brought the former Zimbabwe national team captain to Seven Stars in 1998, arrived a year later to replace Pitso Mosimane. He was instrumental in promoting Tembo to a coaching role in July 2012.
When Hunt left SuperSport at the end of the 2012/13 season to join Bidvest Wits, Tembo was appointed as the head coach of SuperSport in July 2018. After Thabo September declined an assistant coaching role at the Durban club, Tembo was reportedly approached but apparently refused the offer.

WHAT KAITANO TEMBO IS DOING CURRENTLY
Tembo is currently with the DStv Diski Challenge [DDC] team of Sekhukhune United. Following the appointment of Eric Tinkler last season, Tembo had to step aside for Marc van Heerden.
Previously, he served as an assistant coach to Lehlohonolo Seema, who was replaced by Tinkler early this year. Paulus Masehe also joined Tinkler as a second assistant.
Tembo coached Richards Bay from July 2023 until December of the same year, but was dismissed on Christmas Day.
Meanwhile, Hunt is being assisted by Pitso Dladla, who worked with Simo Dladla last season. The club is expected to bring in Daine Klate to coach the DDC side. Klate is in talks with the Durban club.
