Mamelodi Sundowns have officially confirmed the signing of Bafana Bafana international Fawaaz Basadien from Stellenbosch FC. This move strengthens the Tshwane giants’ squad as they prepare for the upcoming season.
Basadien, a left-back, joins the reigning Betway Premiership champions after much speculation regarding his future. He spent the past three seasons with Stellenbosch FC.
Sundowns announced the Bafana Bafana international’s arrival on Saturday with a social media post declaring, “Basadien joins the home of champions.”
“The Yellow Nation is proud to welcome Bafana Bafana international defender, Fawaaz Basadien,” reads the club statement. “New season, new signings. It’s time to get ready for a new season! Introducing our newest signing – the versatile & talented Fawaaz Basadien. Welcome to the Yellow Nation, Fawaaz.”

Masandawana beat competition from rivals Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, who were also linked with a move for the 28-year-old.
The left-back is a third departure at Stellenbosch FC following the exits of SA junior international Tylon Smith and forward Faiz Abrahams.

Smith has joined EFL Championship side Queens Park Rangers, making the 20-year-old the first player to progress through Stellenbosch’s Under-14, U-16, U-18, and reserve teams before securing a move abroad.
Faiz Abrahams, who joined Stellenbosch at the start of last season and made his senior debut against Kaizer Chiefs in March, has moved to Israeli second-division side Hapoel Kfar Saba on a season-long loan for the 2025/26 season.
The Bafana Bafana player enjoyed a successful tenure at Stellenbosch. During his time with the club, he was a key figure in their 2023 Carling Knockout Cup victory and played an instrumental role in their journey to the semi-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup.
Furthermore, his spectacular goal against Cape Town City FC last season has earned a nomination for the Betway Premiership Goal of the Season. Basadien is up against his new teammates Lucas Ribeiro and Kaizer Chiefs player Glody Lilepo for the award.
Basadien will immediately join his new teammates in their pre-season camp in Rustenburg. Sundowns will open their 2025/26 campaign with an MTN8 match against Richards Bay at Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium.
