Nabi reveals Chiefs’ new captain after Maart’s exit

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi has revealed the club’s new captain following the departure of Yusuf Maart earlier this month.

The 30-year-old midfielder parted ways with Amakhosi to join Austrian Bundesliga side SV Ried, ending a three-year stint with the Soweto giants.

Maart had been with Chiefs since the start of the 2022/23 campaign when he signed from Sekhukhune United.

With Yusuf Maart departing after leading Chiefs to end their ten-year trophy drought by scoring the winner in the 2025 Nedbank Cup final against Orlando Pirates, Nabi has confirmed that Inácio Miguel has been chosen as the permanent captain for the team, replacing Maart.

The Angolan defender wore the captain’s armband in the Toyota Cup clash against Asante Kotoko, a match Chiefs ultimately lost 3-2 on penalties on Saturday at the Moses Mabhida Stadium. He was also wearing it during the pre-season friendlies that took place in the Netherlands camp.

MIGUEL NAMED CHIEFS’ NEW CAPTAIN

“Today [Saturday], Miguel [was a captain]. He will captain the team for the upcoming season,” said Nabi.

Meanwhile, Nabi shared his thoughts on the Kotoko match, expressing satisfaction with his team’s performance despite them squandering opportunities to win the game.

“I’m very satisfied with what I saw in the game. It allowed us to see where we are right now,” Nabi added. “It’s true that we would have liked to finish off the game and make the supporters happy as well.

“We feel that the players made a lot of effort to win the game. But unfortunately, we didn’t make it. We could have won the match in the last ten minutes of the game. Unfortunately, we didn’t, and that’s how it is.

“In general, I’m satisfied with the performance, and we have two weeks left before the first game. We’re going to take advantage of those two weeks to improve what has not been positive enough and to coach more on what has been positive.”

Chiefs will open their 2025/26 campaign with an away clash against Stellenbosch FC in the Betway Premiership.
