Veteran midfielder Fortune Makaringe has opened up about his challenging experience at Cape Town City FC leading up to their relegation from the Betway Premiership.
Following their relegation from the Betway Premiership, Cape Town City have undertaken a significant squad overhaul, releasing several key players. Among those deemed surplus to requirements is Fortune Makaringe.
Other notable players who have departed the club include Thabo Nodada, Thamsanqa Mkhize, Darwin Gonzรกlez, Darren Keet, Haashim Domingo, Elson Sithole, and Kamohelo Mokotjo. Interestingly, the club made a late decision to retain Lorenzo Gordinho, who was initially on the list of released players.
Cape Town City’s relegation came after a disappointing 15th-place finish in the previous season. Their struggles continued into the PSL Promotional/Relegation Playoffs, where they managed only a third-place finish with a meagre three points from four matches, failing to regain their top-flight status.

Orbit College FC walked away with the bragging rights as they secured the promotion ticket to the Betway Premiership. They were in pole position with eight points from four games.
WHAT MIDFIELDER FORTUNE MAKARINGE SAID
And Makaringe, who is now club hunting, said a lot could have been done to preserve CT City’s Betway Premiership slot, on both the field of play and at the administration level.
In an interview with FARPost, the 32-year-old former Maritzburg United and Orlando Pirates midfielder said: “Cape Town City is a great team full of great people. I absolutely had a great sense of belonging.
“Yes, it was just a season full of a lot of lessons worth the experience, one wouldโve hoped for a better outcome. It just wasnโt to be the case even after everything we all went through together to manage the situation.
“I guess thereโs a lot that couldโve been done better since we all had a fair share. But all of that comes with experience, of course,” Makaringe told FARPost.
