One goal after 23 matches: Ex-Chiefs star weighs in on Billiat’s situation

An ex-Kaizer Chiefs forward has shared his thoughts on Khama Billiat’s situation at Scottland FC, where the attacker has one goal after 23 matches.

Billiat’s coach, Tonderai Ndiraya, was first to admit that it will take a long time for him to establish a fluid team from the highly-rated players they signed.

“We are not yet a team. It’s one thing to have a galaxy of stars. And it’s another thing to make them play like a team,” Ndiraya said after his team’s first match of the season.

Undoubtedly, his words have come to pass as some of the highly-rated players have been loaned out after failing to break into the first team.

Striker, Lynoth Chikuhwa, who won the Golden Boot last season after notching 17 goals, was frozen out. He scored one goal before being loaned to Chicken Inn FC. For Khama Billiat, it has not been rosy, having also scored one goal in over 15 appearances for Scottland FC.

The former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns talisman arrived at the club amid some much expectations. But his statistics paint a grim picture for a player who was the Soccer Star of the Year runner-up in 2024.

The 34-year-old forward did not play in his team’s last four matches against Ngezi Platinum Stars, Highlanders FC, Bikita Minerals and Yadah FC due to injury. Eleven matches remain before Zimbabwe’s Castle Lager Premier Soccer League 2025 season ends.

WHAT THE EX-KAIZER CHIEFS FORWARD SAID

Harare-based ex-Kaizer Chiefs forward Kelvin Mushangizhike, who has been closely following Billiat, said the failure to find a new combination has been his Achilles’ heel.

In an interview with FARPost, Mushangazhike, who starred for Amakhosi in the early 2000s, said: “When he [Billiat] joined Yadah FC last season, it was easy because that one was an already established entity. They had a system in place. It was easy to fit in that is why he managed to score as many goals as he did. He also won awards, and it was so perfect at Yadah.

“But at his current team [Scottland FC], they are new to each other. It’s a new team altogether, having been established two years ago. When they gained promotion, the team made a squad overhaul, signing players to form a completely new team.

“And we all agree that they took a big number of the best talents in Zimbabwe. So in a big way, that has made it different and difficult to establish. In my view, it’s been about combinations. He hasn’t found the right combination. But he remains a quality player. It’s only a matter of time,” added Mushangazhike
