Orlando Pirates’ new signing Abdoulaye Mariko has disclosed what it means to represent the Buccaneers following his debut for the club against Polokwane City FC over the weekend.
The 22-year-old made his first appearance for the Soweto giants in their 2-0 win over the Rise and Shine in the MTN8 quarter-final clash on Saturday, 2 August, at Orlando Stadium. He was introduced in the second-half, replacing Sipho ‘MasterChef’ Mbule in the 70th minute.
Mariko signed for the Sea Robbers in this transfer window period from Malian giants Djoliba FC.
His outstanding performances in both the domestic league and the CAF Champions League drew the interest of Pirates. He was among their standout players in last season’s Champions League, where he helped his former club reach the group stage.

He went on to share the thoughts that ran through his mind right before he was about to make his debut for Pirates against PLK City.
โWearing the Pirates jersey for the first time felt like a dream come true. I knew I was representing a club with great history, pride, and passionate supporters. I felt a deep responsibility to give my best,” he added.
โAt that moment, I was filled with gratitude and determination. I thought about all the sacrifices it took to get there. I was mentally preparing myself, ready to seize the opportunity and show what Iโm capable of.โ
